6/26/24 Cannon Fodder
The Fod is about to go on summer vacation, but before Troy and Joe hit the beach, they debrief the first ever GCN Retreat, reveal some of the content that will be coming to UA-cam during Gen Con, and break down why Episode 40 of Campaign 2 is a huge change in the direction of Gatewalkers. In We Are Stupid, how Lore Skills are meant to function, and General Feats vs. Skill Feats...is one more valuable than the other? Cannon Fodder will be dark for two weeks for summer vacation and will return on Wednesday, July 17th.

    As far as I have played in PFS and SFS, players who ask for immunities get all of the immunities. Same with resistances or vulnerabilities.

    Unfortunately *most* of the population can’t grab a pass to SDCC. It takes a ton of luck, patience, and preparation. Then even after all that you usually don’t get to choose what day(s) to go, you take what’s left and it’s completely sold out within an hour. Something like 80% of people trying to get a badge will not make it. I’m glad things will be recorded this year!

    My suggestion is: be GENEROUS with the answers of recall knowledge checks. This is a heavily tactical combat game, so your players will derive joy from knowing what impacts their effectiveness. They will be in a better mood, more excited, it will lead to a better experience. Leave the mystery for failures and for narrative. So, if they succeed and ask IRW: tell them all! You are still hiding their special attacks and saves for the next questions.

    I think you're conflating Dubious Knowledge (a general skill feat) and Diverse Lore (a thaumaturge class feat). Dubious Knowledge does the one true/one false fact, while Diverse Lore is what allows Matthew to attempt Esoteric Lore checks to Recall Knowledge at a penalty. Diverse Lore also grants a thaumaturge a piece of information as if they had succeeded at a Recall Knowledge check when they Exploit Vulnerability and the result of the check would have been a successful Recall Knowledge check. There are a lot of little Recall Knowledge-related feats that can stack up on one another that my players need to remind of every time. For instance, one of my players is a ranger with Monster Hunter, which allows for a check to Recall Knowledge when he Hunts Prey. He also has Dubious Knowledge, so I am constantly giving him one true & one false fact, and he always plays his character as if both the things I tell him are true! And the false info is usually quickly debunked by our party's thaumaturge!

  • @fuzzychan7777
    @fuzzychan7777 12 годин тому

    I'm probably a bit too generous with my knowledge checks. But I divide my creature stats into 3 categories. Attacks, Defenses, and Special Abilities. If a player succeeds at the Recall Knowledge, they can pick a category and have access to the relevant information. Attacks are To Hit, damage, relevant tags, and if they have Reactive Strike. Special Abilities are for breath weapons, poison, grab, anything that isn't standard. Defenses are immunities, resistances, AC, HP, and the creatures weakest save. But I do agree with generalizing like, undead immunities or construct immunities ect. It's a lot of good information, but it does mean my players really want to make and succeed at recall knowledge checks.

    37:21 Joe, I had the same experience with a Curse of Strahd campaign I ran for about 18 months. There's an encounter fairly early on where the players have to fight several Vampire spawn, who have resistance against non-magical weapons, but the campaign had, nowhere, given the players magical weapons. So that, coupled with the vampire regen, mad the encounter almost unwinnable for the players, and it was a painful and frustrating slog. So the next session, I added a quest to give all of my players scaling magical weapons: the weapons would level up with the players. So in a single session they went from being underpowered to brutally overpowered, and steamrolled the remainder of the campaign: they took out Strahd in a round and a half. I had to add in an unwinnable encounter (survive for ten rounds against a god) to give the campaign any sort of conclusion. So I know what you mean, and I'll never do it again. =) Thanks, guys, great Fod. Enjoy your VACAY!

    Unmistakable lore, dubious knowledge, and diverse lore is very strong for recall knowledge. The -2 can be mitigated with any bonuses to overall recall checks. I can understand meta wise why you may not want to do dubious but outside of that, thaumaturge is a cha based class and esoteric is cha based. Makes sense that you can recall perhaps incorrectly a superstition or information you hear etc.

    The shows at San Diego comic con sound amazing, but just a heads up - unless things have very much changed since Covid, “get a day pass” is something people would have had to do like 6 months ago (and even then, would require a lot of luck if this was their first time going).

    Yes, I agree. Giving out too much treasure is like 50% of most GMs issues whether they realize it or not. It unbalances their game then they think they have to homebrew or change the game to compensate, then they keep making changes until it snowballs out of control and they blame the system for their failure at foresight. Most people have actually never played any game RAW or RAI because they start not completely understanding the rules and never realized it. As a GM who dies pay tightly to the rules I see this constantly and players love the way I run my games.

  • @danielslack4078
    @danielslack4078 14 годин тому

    For recall knowledge checks I have my players write down what they're most interested in and I go of that for the rest of the game unless they change it later. Really quickens things up. Fighters usually go for special attacks, DR, defense. Casters usually go for SR, resistances, immunities, and spell like abilities. Like that.

    On what information you give players when they ask about Immunities and a creature has many: GIVE. THEM. EVERYTHING. You are not going to break the game by giving them a full list of immunities. More often than not only one or two of those things are actually going to be useful information to players, so instead of giving them something worthless or trying to figure out which is the most important for the player, just list them all. Otherwise, players will realise they have to RK 10 times before they get what they need, which means they just won't do it all. Let Recall Knowledge be USEFUL and your players WILL USE IT.

    This is how i do rolling for information. I'm going to revamp the system where the player can ask for Resistances and I will state it has DR/SR/Resistances/Immunities/Weakness. Then if they want to know the values of the amount of DR and SR that costs 1 useful information instead of giving all the information listed under defensive abilities. But with this system in place you can roll a knowledge history on an undead creature to still figure out that a graveknights destruction lies in tossing his armor into a volcano as you have have researched historic tradition, same with knowledge engineering and constructs you might figure out its weakness. DC: for monster 10+CR, each 5 over the DC is an additional piece of information. You have to decide what knowledge you roll. If it's the correct one, you get more pointed information. If it's the wrong one, you may still learn something new. This is in place to notspoil and keep the mystery of a creature. What do I get when Rolling for monster information when I ask for it? base knowledge = Name, Creature type, subtypes Saves: Best Save / Worst Save Offensive Abilities: Spell casting, breath attack, attacks Defensive Abilities: Fast healing, natural effects, etc. Resistances/immunities: DR/SR/Resistances/Immunities/Weakness Special abilities: (name all special abilities of the creature if it has those so the player can pick) Base creature stuff: Languages, senses, movement

    Telling the players the monster has no immunities is giving them quite a bit of information about all the different things they aren't immune to. So I usually tell them more immunities than one if they have several.

    When it comes to a LONG list of Immunities, 11/10 times thats a result of the creature's type, so I would ball all that up in "It has object immunities" or "its undead". I think adventurer's WOULD know the general categorical immunities like that, especially a Pathfinder who would receive formal training in adventuring. I'd say "and you would know that constructs are generally immune to 1,2,3,4,5,6,7...". If there is a standout immunity, like a construct with Fire immunity, that stands out on its own as something outside the norm and would give that first. A creatures type is usually, but not always obvious. Osyluths for example look a hell of a lot like an undead, but they are Devils, and therefore have the resistances and immunities of a devil, not a skeleton.
